Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 6)

Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 6)

Hershey Foods: Buffett is rumored to have purchased Hershey Foods on several occasions, but we have no confirmed purchase to sink our teeth into. He has used it as an example in discussing the concept of a durable competitive advantage. Its been making chocolate forever and is the largest producer in America. The majority of the voting stock fo the company is held in trust for the benefit of the Milton Hershey School for Orphans. The company's founder, Milton Hershey, left the majority of his wealth to benefit the children who had made him rich. What this means to you the investor is that there is one large shareholder - the trust for the orphanage - which can wield an incredible amount of weight. The company gets high ROE and ROTC. Its per share earnings have been growing at an annual rate of 9.9% for the last 10 years. It traded at a PE of 33 during the bubble, which is too steep for this business. Try to get it at a PE below 15, which you could ahve done up until 1996. Even if you have a sweet tooth, wait for a recession or panic sell-off to take a bite.

ROE: high
ROTC: high
Per share earnings annual growth rate: 9.9% (the last 10 years)
Price bought: Wait for a recession or panic sell-off to buy

Interpublic Group of Companies: In 1974, Interpublic was the largest company in the international advertising business. Now it is number three. Advertising agencies, according to Buffett, earn a royalty on the growth of other businesses. When manufacturers want to take their products to market, they have to advertise, so they use an agency.
Agencies produce and place ads in the media and are paid a percentage of what the advertiser spends for these services. Agencies are almost inflation-proof. Inflation causes advertisers to spend more for the same amount of work, and the more advertisers spend, the more the agencies make. Agencies are service businesses so they spend only modesly on capital equipment, which means that profits don't go toward replacing worn-out plant and equipment. Plus, only 4% of U.S. advertisers change agencies every year! In other words, those big accounts stay in place. Many of the large agencies that dominated the marketplace years ago still dominate it today. Seven of the top ten are in their fifth or sixth generration of management. The key here is that there is no limit on how big they can grow. As long as businesses grow and the media continue to be where manufacturers take their products to market, advertising agencies will continue to grow as well.
The numbers on Interpublic are great. For the last 10 years it has earned an annual ROE of 16% or better, with the last 3 years at over 20%. Per share earnings for the last 10 years have been growing at an annual rate of 13.8%. Buffett used the 1973-74 recession to buy 17% of Interpublic, which traded as low as $3 a share, against earnings of $0.81. He paid a total $4,531,000 for 592,650 shares, for an averge price of $7.65 per share. We don't know when he sold his interest in this company. We do know that if he had held his position, he would have 74.6 million shares, adjusted for stock splits, worth approximately $2.8 billion. This equates to a compounding annual rate of return of approximately 27% for the 27-year period. If you're patient, you can get a great price on this one. During the 1999 bubble, it traded at a PE of 33 - too high for even this wonderful business. In the midnineties, you could have bought it for 14 x earnings.

Price bought: average price $7.65 (bought in 1973-74 recession, was traded as low as $3 a share)
Earnings: $0.81 a share
ROE: > 16% (over the last 10 years, with last 3 years, ROE greater than 20%)
Per share earnings annual growth rate: 13.8% (over last 10 years)

Kaiser Aluminium & Chemical Corp: This is one of the few investment mistakes that Buffett made in his early days. He bought based on earnings in good "businesslike" fashion, but the earnings soon vanished as they often do in a price-competitive business. He lost money on this one.

McDonald's Corp: McDonald's made the hamburger into a brand-name product with some 28 thousand restaurants - no easy feat. Over the last 10 years the company has had a yearly ROE between 16% and 20%, which is delicious. And its per share earnings have been growing at an annual rate of 12%. It's a great company, and at the right price it is a great investment. Buffett acquired 60 million shares in 1994 and 1995 for $1.2 billion, which equates to $20 a share. He was then rumoured to be selling them in 1997 to 1999 for between $30 and $45 a share as he sold into the bubble. This turned out to be a wise decision. At the right price, Buffett will once agains be buying McDonald's shares, and so would you.

Price bought: average $20 a share (in 1994 and 1995)
ROE: 16%-20% (over the last 10 years)
Per share earnings annual growth rate: 12% (the last 10 years)
Price sold: $30 - $45 a share ( in 1997 to 1999, sold into the bubble)

Related topics:
Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 1)
Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 2)
Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 3)
Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 4)
Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 5)
Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 6)
Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 7)
Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 8)
Warren Buffett's Historical Investments (Part 9)

This item provided by Investing Notes

Christian Businesses Play Vital Roles In Thier Community

A Christian business should be a source of strength in the community it serves. More awareness needs to be focused on the important roles that they play in the community and marketplace. Christian businessmen, standing at the junction of faith and business need to achieve more than just interjecting faith into the workplace, we can show Christian love and servant leadership by taking the lead to resolve social problems.

Many faith-based businesses get lumped together with social entrepreneurs, businesses that channel some or all of their profits into programs to help the homeless, relief organizations in third world countries and other philanthropic causes.

Social Entrepreneurs

The idea of being a socially responsible business is on the upswing, but learning to live right and helping those in need, is a concept that Christian-owned businesses have followed for a long time. A recent report in Business Week estimated the revenues of purpose driven companies has skyrocketed to about $40 billion.

Nutriset, a private company in France was founded by former African aid worker Michel Lescanne, his company has been selling food products to combat hunger and malnutrition since 1986.

Kirsten Tobey, and Kristin Richmond of Revolution Foods, talked to teachers, principals, parents, and students in public schools across the Bay Area, and discovered that they were concerned with better quality meals in schools. So the pair devised a concept to deliver nutritious and healthy lunches.

Christian Businesses That Are Making A Profit And A Difference

Chocolate manufacturer Milton S. Hershey and his wife, Catherine, staunch Christians started the Milton Hershey School in 1909 and donated his fortune for the ''maintenance, support and education'' of poor orphan boys.

Christian businessman Julius Walls Jr. is a minister and CEO of Greystone bakery a $5-million-a year-business that makes gourmet cakes which are served at the some of the finest restaurants in New York city.

Greystone bakery has become a role model for companies that want to mix social action into their business model. The bakery plows its profits into the Greyston Foundation, a non-profit arm that runs programs for needy families in it's surrounding neighborhood, whether or not they work for the bakery.

The foundation is funded through the bakery, grants, other business ventures, and private donations. It provides jobs, offers a computer class for school-age kids, and a clinic for people who are HIV positive.

Your Christian Business Can Make A Difference In Your Community

"The followers of Jesus will begin to demonstrate a new set of horizons for human life to their neighbors and even to their enemies—the horizons of shalom, the horizons of true humanity living in dependence on God. " Andy Crouch-Culture Making

If you want your Christian business to make a difference in your community, follow the lead of these successful businessmen that are changing lives and the way businesses use their profits.

Mohammd Yanus Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of Garmeen Bank. A foundation that helps women create businesses to sell eye glasses to those who can rarely afford them, but need them the most.

In the 21st Century Christian businesses are poised to grow in size, influence and the ability to make positive impact in local communities. They can't shrink away from the true mission of every Christian, to do good, Isaiah, and make this world a better place.

The Milton Hershey School

What comes to mind when I say "Hershey".

For me the first thing to pop in my head has always been the classic brown chocolate bar with it's bold white writing. Visions of girlscout camp S'mores and Halloween's past follow quickly behind that. . .

Since the late 90's Hershey has also made me think of my brother Ted, who attended medical school in the town of Hershey. As a matter of fact, whenever we take a road trip south and drive past the signs for Hershey on I81 I have to call him on the cell phone, just to tell him we are passing it!

But a few weeks ago I went on a trip that changed the meaning of the word "Hershey" for me forever! That name is now inextricably tied in my mind to the Milton Hershey School.

The what?

I know, until I was invited to come and tour the Milton Hershey School, I didn't even know it existed! So how did I get invited? Why did I go? What did I learn?

Loyal readers may remember that when I traveled to the South by Southwest conference in March, Hershey sponsored that trip. I was able to connect with them through the Walmart Elevenmoms program. They were a great sponsor to work with. Not only was their representative Tiffany organized, professional and just plain nice, but they have a product that I truly love (mmmm-chocolate). It was an honor to be one of the folks helping them jump into the social media jungle!

Social media in general is all about building relationships. Relationships between the consumers and brands and relationships with the people behind the brands. I really enjoyed getting to know Tiffany from Hershey through that sponsorship opportunity, and the relationship we forged led to her contacting me when they were coordinating a media visit to the Milton Hershey School.

Why did I go?

Well, I live only 3 hours north of Hershey PA, so the trip was an easy drive for me. There was the lure staying at the gorgeous and historic Hotel Hershey and of a visit to the Hershey Spa* on the second day. I would also get the chance to meet and hang out with fellow blogger Renee Ross of Cutie Booty Cakes. I mean really, how many of you would have refused all that?

What really decided me though was the research I did about the school online. Not only did the school seem like a fascinating place to visit, but the more I learned, the more I felt that the information I learned might somehow lead to one of you being able to help a child that you know.

(You can see a slide presentation/story of my entire trip at the Whrrl Website. Just click on "see the story")

So what exactly is the Hershey school? And why does it exist?

Believe it or not, I have waited to write this post because I was really trying to wrap my head around the best way to describe it. Have you ever seen something that was so fantastic, so wonderful, so interesting and meaningful that you doubted you'd really be able to convey the full experience to someone who hadn't been there?

My trip to the Milton Hershey school was sort of like that.

Stripped down to bare bones-it's a school. A boarding school if you will, for needy kids from pre-K through Highschool. We aren't talking a juvie hall or anything here-kids have to have stayed out of trouble and maintained average grades. This school if for kids in need-both financial and social.

From the website:

In keeping with Milton and Catherine Hershey's Deed of Trust , Milton Hershey School nurtures and educates children in social and financial need to lead fulfilling and productive lives. . . Milton Hershey School is a cost-free, private, coeducational home and school for children from families of low income, limited resources, and social need. The School is funded by a trust established by Milton S. Hershey and his wife Catherine. Milton Hershey School offers a positive, structured home life year-round and an excellent pre-kindergarten through 12th grade education. Our vision focuses on building character and providing children with the skills necessary to be successful in all aspects of life.

The average household income for the children who are accepted into the school is $17,000 for a family of 4. Many of them come from broken homes, or from places where they have no support network. Once accepted the students go to live at the school and everything is taken care of. School. Travel expenses. Medical. Dental. clothes. housing. food. Everything-100% free to the students.

What did I learn from visiting? That it is so much more than that.

There is the school, sure. We toured the Highschool facility and were told about the Jr High and the Primary schools. Top notch facilities, a waiting list of teacher applicants, fantastic programs. Honestly-they have audio video and sports facilities far superior to those in my local school system! There are great vocational type programs, like the culinary arts program that was conceived and implemented by the 5 star chef from the world class Hershey Hotel itself.

That could have been all it was, a place to live and go to school, to give kids a superior education then where they were, and a chance at a better life. But it's more, and I don't know exactly how to explain it to you.

The thing that impressed me the most is that everyone we met seem to care, really care, about the kids. About giving them a better chance, and a better start in life than they might have had otherwise. That caring isn't dependent on being lucky enough to have a few good individuals who go above and beyond-it's actually built into the system.

Let me try to explain. When I heard about the school, and that the kids lived there, I assumed that they were in a dormitory type situation.

I was wrong.

The Milton Hershey School operates on a "Family home" style of boarding. These are houses, which look like your basic suburban tract houses, that have a set of house parents** and up to 10 children of the same gender in the same grade range.

The house parents must be married. They cannot have more than 2 children of their own. Their full time job is to provide love, guidance and support to the children under their care. They check homework. They make sure everyone gets to sports practice. They monitor the mandatory chores and ensure that everyone gets new clothes when they grow, medical and dental when they need it, and a safe, steady, loving environment.

The kids stay in the same home, with the same houseparents, until they "graduate" to the next school (ie from primary school to middle school) and a new home.

2 adults and an entire house for 10 kids not the most cost effective way to manage the some 1800 students that attend the school. But the system isn't created for cost effectiveness but for the best interests of the kids.

There are so many more examples like that-I could write a book all about it, but I'll spare you the excessive details.

I do want to mention that the school is completely funded by the Hershey Trust. They do not ask for any money from parents and they don't do any fund raising. The Hershey Trust (a non profit) actually owns 72% stock in the publicly traded Hershey Company. So when you buy a Hershey product, you are directly contributing to the funding of the school.

Now, due to the way that the original Deed of Trust was written by Milton Hershey the school is not allowed to advertise. You read that right, they aren't allowed to advertise themselves! They currently have about 1800 students, but are undergoing a major expansion and are accepting new applications.

If you know of someone who might benefit from attending the Milton Hershey School, or someone who works with kids who might benefit, then please tell them about it! Guidance counselors, clergy, folks who work in social services. Even a family friend who might be in a very tough spot. The more folks who know about the school, the more kids who can get helped.

The admissions section of the website has extensive information on the critera, selection etc-you can refer folks there. There is also a section of the website for professionals who may wish to refer children to the school. The Milton Hershey School also holds events for social service and educational professionals to learn about the School and the application and enrollment process.

I just want to end by saying a big "Thank You" again to the entire Hershey's team. The trip was truly an enjoyable and educational experience!

*Note: I'll be writing more about the spa experience-and frugal alternatives-soon.
**Note: The school is not trying to supersede the biological parents. Parents and children are encouraged to maintain close contact-the school even covers all travel arrangements for kids to visit home for breaks etc. However if students to not have a safe enviroment to return to they are also welcome to stay at the school.

Photos by Koyochi and The Prodigal Untitled

My Trip to Hershey

I used a really neat application called Whrrl to document the visit in a "story". You can head on over and look at the story of my visit to the Milton Hershey School to see-it is basically a slide show of picture and comments.

I will be writing more about the school, because it is a fantastic charitable organization! I think that many of you out there will know some folks who might benefit from the school. But that will be in a few days!

Oh The Places You Will Go

It’s Close to Midnight, something evil is lurking in the dark - Michael Jackson

To be specific it is after midnight and the evil lurking is my 4:45 am call time. Yes, you read that correctly, 4:45 am. I am here at the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square for the wrap of the EA SPORTS Active 30 Day Challenge. I am happy to be here with my fellow challengers and have had a wonderful time so far. We ate at Tao which I have been longing to do forever- the best sushi ever! And my room overlooks the lights on Broadway, can it get any better than that?

Just to put everything in context this is my third hotel in five days in two states and the District of Columbia. I have been a traveling fool, loving every minute of it and I have many tales to tell about my wonderful visit to Hershey, PA and the Milton Hershey School, and my trip to the Night At The Museum: Battle of The Smithsonian premier where I walked the red carpet(which was actually blue) and hobknobbed with the stars of the movies. Funny how the papparazzi was not interested in interviewing me - ha!

But alas, these are tales for another day because right now I need to get some sleep. You never know, you might see me on The Today Show this morning. Well, please watch out for that (but don't blink you might miss me) and until I am able to dazzle you with my tales of adventures far and wide please check out my latest post on BlogHer.com it is all about traveling with my son. My Hershey Spa experience and some frugal ways to replicate some spa treats. A garden post about planting my peas and buying my petunias. A couple more giveaways (Rubbermaid containers, Maybelline mascara, and a whole beach bag full of cool stuff). Summer BBQ Tips & Tricks.

Yeah-None of that is happening today.

I'm going to sit on the sofa, maybe use twitter and facebook a bit, and vegetate. Hopefully a nap is in the offing before the kiddos get home from school.

But I am going to ask for your help. Monday's show for Frugal Coast2Coast is going to be in honor of Memorial Day, which is the kickoff of backyard BBQ & Cookout season here in the North. Frugal Road Trips

I'm heading out this morning on a short road trip. Courtesy of the lovely folks at Hershey's, I am taking a 3 hour jaunt south to visit the Milton Hershey School and Hershey's Headquarters-to include an overnight stay at the gorgeous Hershey Hotel and a massage at the spa*.

As I planned for the drive, I realized that I've never written about frugal road trip tips and tricks!

So here it goes-my 4 basic tips for saving money on a car trip:

#1-Make sure your car is in good shape-services up to date, oil levels correct, tank full, and tires inflated. Correctly inflated tires will improve your gas mileage. Standard preventative maintenance could help prevent breakdowns on the trip. Expensive repairs on the road are not frugal.

#2-Bring your own snacks. Gas station & drive thru food add up fast. Plus snacks for home are likely to be much healthier for ya. Snacks are especially important for keeping the kiddos busy on a long trip-I like to use those small snack sized bags and pack several small portions of 4 or 5 different snacks.

#3-Bring your own drinks. ditto to all the points above. If you need coffee to stay awake, then by all means buy some. Saving a little money isn't worth falling asleep at the wheel! Then again, it doesn't cost anything at all to pull over in a rest area and take a quick nap either.

#4-Get books on tape/cd at your library. I've found that listening to a novel really makes the time seem to fly. . . I used to do the "buy and return" thing at Cracker Barrel, but borrowing them for free from your library is even better.

Those are my big 4 tips! What are yours?

*They are paying for it, that's what I call frugal.

My husband has grown accustomed to my "enthusiasms," but there were a few evenings where he had to convince me that, no, we were not going to leave New York City to raise gourmet tomatoes like Tim Stark.

Through the wonder that is GoogleEarth, I was able to spend some time looking at the farm where Eric, who harvests our wheat, lives.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL1ub-tQvI/AAAAAAAACWA/J9YC6Kiigp4/s320/Ericfarm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333095086893646578" />

For the uninitiated, let me explain. Eric lives in Pennsylvania. Our wheat farm is in Nebraska (and Colorado).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL1ENt6mEI/AAAAAAAACU4/dzhT719x73U/s320/Ericmap.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333094361510615106" />

Eric, like some ship's captain of yore, gets his crew together each spring, then begins to follow the ripening wheat belt across the US. Here is a map in his office, with push pins stuck in at each of the farms he visits.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL01kN6UjI/AAAAAAAACUo/VrTGKkpJM3k/s320/mapcloseup.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333094109852357170" />

I generally love maps; this one was fun because it was 3 dimensional. Our farm is marked here with a yellow push pin. I asked Eric why our farm got a yellow pin, and he said: "Yellow means special," then confessed that he had simply run out of red pins. Seeing the country like this, with all its mountains, deserts and plains made me nostalgic for the many road trips I took as a child, and I began plotting how, for example, I could drive to Santa Fe to see my friend, the poet Orlando, over the summer. Then it occurred to me that it would probably be 105 in Santa Fe and my husband might not like it if I started driving around from place to place for weeks on end.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL9fyJnlwI/AAAAAAAACWI/oIfDUa12NlY/s320/combine.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333103631239976706" />

Eric and his wife Emily took my mother and me to see a number of things in the area where they live, including this Case dealership, which provides the combines Eric uses to cut wheat. I liked this photo because the golf cart gives you a sense of just how large the equipment is that farmers use.

Eric also had a great deal of fun telling people that he was entertaining one of his "farmers," then producing yours truly; I am, of course, not at all what anyone envisions when thinking of farmers. But I also love it when things aren't what they seem, and it was a very fun game to play.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL1qSsjkLI/AAAAAAAACV4/I---PKPhf1o/s320/cowpower.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333095015682117810" />

We visited the large Brubaker dairy farm, which is powered from methane gas converted from cow dung. This is, apparently, one of the many ways in which science and agriculture are working together to find "green" ways to power industry. I had many questions--most notably how cost effective all of this is. Still, it's an interesting experiment and I'll be curious to see how something like this develops and expands.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/Sf9VqrRTPlI/AAAAAAAACTY/re5-yRTdzng/s320/photo(9).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332074675488112210" />

I have a hard time remembering that livestock are also "farmed." I have this bias, I suppose, that agriculture is farming, but suspect that's mostly due to my upbringing. But cows, chickens and hogs are all farmed, and I will have to spend some time thinking about how I feel about this. We visited a few dairy farms. I would say that the happiest cows I saw were definitely the three pictured above at Hershey's Chocolate World, where I ate a very nice chocolate bar. Seriously, though, one of the reasons that there are so many dairies in Lancaster County, is because of the Hershey's Chocolate factory--and M&M and Mars too.

I did not realize just how powerful Hershey is. There is the town of Hershey, with chocolate kiss shaped streetlights. There is a hospital. And there is also the Milton Hershey School, founded in 1909, initially for orphans, but which now functions as a series of group homes and a school for children whose parents cannot care for them.

According to Wikipedia:

A married houseparent couple with child care experience provides full-time supervision for each residence, caring for 9 to 13 children of the same gender, and about the same age. A student will share his (or her) bedrooms with one or two other students.

That's some job.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL1ma4go4I/AAAAAAAACVw/AryxvZCo5ww/s320/Tomatoseeder.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333094949160264578" />

We also had fun visiting Darren, who was on Eric's combine crew last year, and kept a blog of his adventures which my mother and I followed religiously after Eric left Nebraska for Idaho.

Darren grew up in Lancaster County, on a farm. Here he is wearing his CIA shirt, which means "Christ is Alive," and posing next to a tomato seeder. The trays are put into a greenhouse, where they sprout . . .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL1buWI6OI/AAAAAAAACVg/zHmA-J5HM7Y/s320/tomatoplanter.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333094765406251234" />

. . . and then the seedlings are planted via this intricate looking machine. I thought of my father, and how he enjoyed seeing and understanding how things work, and how he would have appreciated this planter. Tomatoes, unlike wheat, take an enormous amount of handwork. We certainly don't raise wheat seedlings, for example. This would be one reason why tomatoes are such a pain to farm--and why they are so expensive.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL1iKNTdaI/AAAAAAAACVo/QISMe002HOE/s320/helicopter.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333094875964601762" />

Darren's brother is a licensed helicopter pilot, and will take out this little flyer to spray fields. My mother said: "Oh! He must make a good date for girls!" Me, I was thinking about Luke targeting womprats back in Beggar's Canyon.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL1Te2xFXI/AAAAAAAACVQ/FQJbb1HN22U/s320/Amishnotill.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333094623809181042" />

Lancaster County is also Amish country. Eric had arranged for us to meet with a lovely tour guide, Jim, and his wife, Effie, who took us to meet some Amish farmers. I told my mother she could spot an Amish farm because it would generally not have an electrical line running to the house. I think it was easier to pick out the houses by the kind of laundry hanging on the line outside--it was easily 95 degrees that day and everyone had something out to dry.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/Sf9VyzeB_BI/AAAAAAAACTo/zJPALtYNyeo/s320/photo(7).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5332074815127944210" />

I had a long conversation with Samuel (who I could not photograph) and we spoke about the differences and similarities in our farming techniques. Samuel has about 40 acres, which is pretty much what his mules can handle. We have, um, much more than that. But Samuel believes firmly in no till farming, which we also practice. With no till, basically, farmers do not till the land, but kill weeds with herbicides, then plant seed directly into the ground. Believe it or not, this has been found to be a more environmentally friendly way to farm and Scientific American has made it the subject of their cover story this month.

It's interesting. Here's an Amish farmer with his 19th century tactics and mules, and we with our $250K combines, all farming the same way. Note, though, that the Amish farmer has steel wheels on his "tractor." This is because air tires would be "too easy." I pushed a little bit and asked Samuel where he got his chemicals, and it did eventually come out that he had to purchase them from an "Englisher," (ie anyone who is not Amish, even me).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL0C9193VI/AAAAAAAACUY/0MtPPYVughs/s320/plantingcorn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333093240557919570" />

Here, by contrast, is Eric's brother and yours truly sitting in a tractor with air conditioning, rubber tires and no mules, planting corn via no till farming (the earth has not been tilled).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KKOjBo6EGMg/SgL0G833ngI/AAAAAAAACUg/nG1xHeipPd4/s320/corn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333093309016940034" />

The corn is pre-treated with some kind of pesticide (I think). I did not realize that most corn here is raised as "silage" ie fermented feed used to fatten up cows. Because the only farm I have really ever known is in Nebraska, and because we really don't have animals out there--just cash crops--I was unaccustomed to thinking in this Pennsylvania way where animals, crops and industry all work together. In Nebraska, our wheat gets hauled into the Coop bins by the train tracks, and then is sold and dumped into a train car and swept off to Chicago (or somewhere). No one is making chocolate or tomatoes in western Nebraska.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.bl | | | | |
