Hershey – Ideal Community for Orphans
and/or
Milton S. Hershey – “His Deeds are His Monument, His Life is Our Inspiration”
Milton Hershey is well known for his chocolate. You can find Hershey’s chocolate throughout America and many other countries. Many have written about him likening M.S. Hershey to royalty, such as an Emperor or King of chocolate. However, this is not the Hersheys’ greatest achievement. The far more unique, extraordinary and unparalleled achievement of Milton and Catherine Hershey is The Hershey Industrial School. As part of The Hershey Industrial School, the Hersheys created the community, businesses and education system of Hershey, Pennsylvania. The Hershey Industrial School (which includes the town of Hershey, the Hershey businesses and Hershey’s education system) was established in perpetuity for the benefit of American orphans.
Hershey – Ideal Community for Orphans is about the Hersheys’ intelligent philanthropy. A philanthropy that not only benefited all who were a part of it, its beneficiaries are American children who are orphans, and therefore, through no fault of their own, are at risk of suffering a range of undesirable outcomes. The Hersheys were driven by philanthropic effectiveness, measured by the degree to which each orphan was able to reach his full potential according to his unique characteristics and interests. The Hershey Industrial School fully develops each orphan as a whole person according to such child’s unique potential through its state-of-the-art program tailored around each individual by transforming him into an adult of exceptional character, prepared to make a living as an adult.
In October 2004, I finished Milton S. Hershey – “His Deeds are His Monument, His Life is Our Inspiration.” The purpose of this book, primarily, is to serve as research and educational material, with the overall objective of sharing knowledge of a great man and the philanthropy to which he and his wife gave birth. Its content is intended to provide facts as written and understood by those closest to the Hersheys’ philanthropy. Such book was not written for commercial purposes. Rather, it is a noncommercial educational work. It is my sincere hope that Milton S. Hershey –“His Deeds are His Monument, His Life is Our Inspiration” will serve to educate those who desire to understand the Hersheys’ philanthropy, whether as a member of the School Family, a resident of the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania or one who has an interest in children’s homes or philanthropy in general. To be certain that the conclusions reached following years of research where not simply personal, unsubstantiated views, such book reads like a textbook. Comments designed to enhance the value of such work as research and educational material are welcome. Please contact the author at JohnHalbleib@JohnFHalbleib.com. The first printing of Milton S. Hershey – “His Deeds are His Monument, His Life is Our Inspiration” was of only 100 copies for specific individuals, libraries, museums, etc. The first recipients include the Derry Township Historical Society, Hershey Museum, Hershey Community Archives and the Hershey Public Library. Also, this Web site provides a complete, free, electronic copy of Milton S. Hershey – “His Deeds are His Monument, His Life is Our Inspiration.”
